    What is ISO 9001 Certification?

    ISO 9001 certification means that a certification body, often called a registrar, has audited the quality management system (QMS) of an organization and found that it meets all of the requirements of the ISO 9001 QMS Standard. These audits occur annually and involve all locations and functions within an organization’s structure.

    An important distinction must be noted that being ISO 9001 certified does not guarantee the quality of an organization’s products, nor does it apply directly to the product. ISO 9001 certification simply states that an organization has an effective and continually improving quality management system and that the resulting product should depict the level of quality and performance that the customer has specified.

    The marking of the product itself and/or the product packaging with a logo or mark portraying ISO certification is not permitted.

    How does an organization become ISO certified?

    In order to be ISO 9001 certified an organization must establish an ongoing quality management system that is dedicated to customer satisfaction and the continual improvement of its processes. A certification body (registrar) will then verify the effectiveness and compliance of the quality management system through a series of annual audits.

    Once a registrar has completed the audit of the organization’s ISO 9001 quality management system and found that it is in compliance with the ISO 9001 QMS Standard, the organization receives written assurance in the form of an ISO 9001 certificate.
